"AkuYou are at their best when they’re locked tight in the seething heart of one of their noisy drones, churning out a caterwauling din of dark tribal textures and tempestuous distortion. But with “Cranky,” the opening cut from the band’s upcoming full-length, Body as Weapon, the band proves they can scale back the chaos to a brooding lurch. It takes a few moments for the track to get going, but once the band settles in and begins to serve up the slow tension of the groove, you can feel a definite sense of menace building in the air. Some of that harrowing atmosphere is undercut by Zach Hollback’s searching, melancholy saxophone, which floats and flutters above the track like a wandering spirit, but with vocalist Clara Clamp dishing out haunting lines like: “There’s a mother with a baby and her hands around her neck / Make her stop crying” the feeling of dread and unease soon begin to takeover."
